Sci-Fi Expo | Irving Event Photographer

This weekend Irving was host to the Sci-Fi Expo and I was a excited to go.  To be perfectly honest this was the 1st time I’ve ever attended a Sci-Fi Expo but I had a blast!  I’ve always been a huge fan of science fiction TV shows and movies but this was the first time I got to see some of the more extreme fans and artwork firsthand.

There were some really amazing costumes, since this was the first time to the event I was really just checking things out and seeing what it was all about, I didn’t bother getting any press credentials so I concentrated mainly on some really amazingly detailed models.  They just so happened to have been from two of my all-time favorite shows; Star Blazers and Firefly.  The models were really amazing, I just wish I had brought a macro lens to capture some of the more ornate details because these models were film ready.  The Argo, a Space Battleship is remote controlled, the turrets are are mobile and the anchor can be raised and lowered, there are lights along the command center and the engine comes to life with an amber glow.  I was able to capture a few images that I thought showed them off pretty well, I cleaned up the images and removed some distracting elements and they turned out pretty sweet, I hope you enjoy something a bit different than our typical portrait photography.

After wandering around the convention floor we decided to head upstairs where there was to be a Q&A with Morena Baccarin.  A stunning and talented actress that got her start on Firefly as Inara, but then went on to play some pretty stellar roles in some of my favorite shows of all time, she played Adria in Stargate SG-1, Anna in V and most recently as Jessica on Homeland.  It was a great Q&A but to be honest I didn’t get any pictures that would do her any justice so you’ll just have to look online for some references.

Following the Q&A I spent some time looking around and checking out the amazing detail that went into some of the costumes.  Chewbacca and a Rebel soldier made an appearance in the lobby, this happened to be the only to people I decided to capture an image of this time.

I did spend some time thinking about how I’d like to handle the logistics of creating some portraits next time and when Comic-Con rolls around in May I think I’ll go and see what I’ve been missing all these years.
